ABOUT BOY BLUE

Company Profile

Award-winning dance company Boy Blue was founded in London by choreographer Kenrick ‘H20’ Sandy MBE and composer Michael ‘Mikey J’ Asante. As joint Artistic Directors, they work together on the creation and development of Boy Blue’s productions and projects.

Since its inception in 2001, Kenrick and Michael have worked to engage and inspire through the creation of first class work for the stage and screen and the training of young dancers.  Always keen to take hip-hop beyond the streets and clubs, Kenrick and Michael have been at the forefront of the UK movement to present hip-hop as an art form in its own right, creating dance theatre productions from the outset.

Their breakthrough came with the production Pied Piper, originally presented at Theatre Royal Stratford East, before transferring to the Barbican, London, and touring the UK.  Pied Piper won the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre in 2007.  In 2009, Boy Blue were invited to join the Barbican as an Associate Artist and have since presented Touch (2011) The Five & The Prophecy of Prana (2013), A Night with Boy Blue (2016, 2015, 2013) and the critically acclaimed Blak Whyte Gray (2017), which was nominated for Best New Dance Production at the 2017 Olivier Awards, nominated for Achievement in dance in the UK Theatre Awards 2017 for Dickson Mbi’s performance and is nominated in the Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards for Best Modern Choreography.

Boy Blue Entertainment contributed to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics, where in collaboration with Danny Boyle, Kenrick choreographed hundreds of young dancers for the segment ‘Frankie and June say thanks Tim’, as well as staging the handover of the Olympic torch and the lighting of the Olympic Cauldron.

Boy Blue run a highly respected training programme in East London, unique in enabling more than 100 young dancers to train weekly alongside professionals.  Their work, Emancipation of Expressionism is part of the AQA GCSE Dance Syllabus, the first hip-hop dance theatre piece to be included.

Acclaimed for presenting “the perfect marriage of music and dance” Boy Blue showcase boundless creative energy in their performances, delivering thrilling and raw dance sequences.  The company is proud to be home to some of the UK’s most sought-after hip-hop artists.
